I figure you wouldn't be broken forever or some nonsense but. It was sweet. He wanted to be sure I wouldn't hurt you.

Besides, I've no plans to wander off on you.

Yeah, but we've talked about this, and if you were to find a man who wanted to do the proper thing and settle down with you--

[He cares about her happiness, but as a 1920s dude, he leans towards assuming that her happiness includes an eventual husband, kids, and a white picket fence.]

[furgood]

Hey. [She turns and grasps his hand in both of hers ] I'm not-- it's not always the right thing, you know, I'm a hopeless romantic and I love seeing people romantically happy and weddings are great but-- I'm not here to marry you. You don't want it and I'm not sure I even want that. My last relationship has... soured that idea. But I'm not-- I'm getting turned around.

It might be your idea of what should be done but that's your idea that you keep bringing up and I don't know if this-- whatever we have-- bothers you. Being in a relationship that won't lead to the traditional commitments.

[devoutish]

It doesn't bother me. I worry that it'll bother you, eventually.

[He hesitates.]

Do I really bring it up that much?

[furgood]

No it's just... the way you said it. Like this is the wrong thing. [She lets go, raising her hands a little in an exaggerated shrug ]

[devoutish]

I'm used to women who would want that, eventually. Who might think, "Well, he's saying this now, because that's how men are, but I can make him change his mind".

I'll try to worry less, eh?

[furgood]

I'm not trying to change your mind. About anything.

[devoutish]

I believe you. I honestly do.

[He finds her hand, squeezing it.]

I've never been more unsure about my future or my place in the world than I am here, that's all. It does my head in a bit.

[furgood]

I understand. I do. [She presses a soft kiss to his cheek] If you need to talk... You heard a lot of my problems and all.

[devoutish]

I was gonna tell you something today, actually, once we've sat down.

[furgood]

Shall we then? [She steps back a little and gestures out toward the lakeshore ]

[devoutish]

I'm looking for a nice spot in the sun.

[He winks.]

Bit chilly, innit.

[furgood]

[Hums, dancing a few steps out of reach to ponder their surroundings ] Meowbe. I purrfer it to winter for sure.

[devoutish]

So do I, dear; so do I.

[He tosses her the tablecloth; she can spread it out.]

[furgood]

[ She gives it a few good flicks, spreading it out on the ground in the most well lit spot, kneeling to smooth it. ]

So what else did you bring?

[devoutish]

Sit down and I'll show you.

[Once they're settled, he starts unpacking the food. It's nothing fancy - just a couple of sandwiches made with his challah.]

[furgood]

[Anything she didn't make with her own two hands is fancy enough honestly. She's district enough to not complain but she can still miss the easy convenience of the capitol ] Looks delicious!

[devoutish]

Mm. They've got cheese in them, and lettuce, but no meat. That's all right, I hope?

[furgood]

That's fine. I'm not too hung up on having meat.

[devoutish]

[Good. He unwraps a sandwich half for himself, taking a bite and chewing it fully before speaking again.]

I've asked Zephyr to fuck about with my lifespan a bit.

[furgood]

[She doesn't pause in her bite but she does settle the hand holding the sandwich on her lap. She takes the time chewing affords her to form her response ]

So does that mean you'll live longer? Or... I'm not sure what else that could mean.

[devoutish]

Yeah, longer. Don't know how long yet, but longer.

[furgood]

[She tilts her head ] You used to seem pretty set against letting Zephyr interfere with you.

[devoutish]

I still am, by and large. I thought about it for a good long while before I did it.
